Went back to the Brooklyn Bridge Park this morning at c. 8 am but the bird count was low, possibly due to the high level of people activity (workmen depositing top soil and lots of joggers) but, most likely, because of the weather (low hanging fog and overcast). Even so, there were birds. Lots of Brant in the river and inlets plus Gadwall and Mallards. Also Laughing, Great Black-backed and Herring Gulls, Double-crested Cormorants and an overflying loon, probably Common. On (or over) land: Barn Swallows, House Wren, several singing American Robins, Common Yellowthroat, a female Eastern Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, several White-throated Sparrows (including some very striking males) and Common Grackles. As the season progresses, the weather improves and the vegetation matures, this strip of manufactured parkland at the western edge of Long Island (and in the shadow of downtown Manhattan) will undoubtedly catch more than a few migrants.
